SHE has been an international model, a drug addict and then a heroin dealer, but it took two years in jail to show Tovah Cottle what she really wanted was a career in fashion.

The 31-year-old is now in her second year of a fashion design course at Brisbane's Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE.

It's a world away from Cottle's 10-year association with drugs and crime that finally ended when she was jailed in 2005.

Fashion designers are closing their Russian outposts and retreating from Moscow after months of disappointing sales, with Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood among those forced to pull down the shutters.

With the rouble plummeting in value and Russia's billionaires tumbling down the Forbes rich list, Moscow's gilded elite are reining in their spending – with British fashion one of the first casualties.

Vivienne Westwood confirmed this weekend that it has closed the designer's store on the exclusive "Boulevard Ring" – one of the most expensive shopping streets in Moscow – explaining that the shop's paltry returns can no longer justify the city's sky-high rents.

"We closed the store because Vivienne is an independent company – we don't have any big group that supports us – so we can't have a store open just for the prestige," said Carlo D'Amario, managing director of Vivienne Westwood. "In Moscow before the crisis the rent became really high, more than in a city like New York or London. The key is the cost of rent," said Mr D'Amario.

In a country known for its love of ostentatious glamour and status symbols, it seems that understated, cutting-edge fashion has been the first victim of the recession.

While all high-end designers have been affected by the downturn in the Russian economy, which is predicted to decline by 4.5 per cent this year, French and Italian labels appear to be faring much better than their British counterparts.

"Italian and French designers are much better known than the English. They are easy to wear and easy to show off – even people who are far away from fashion know Dolce & Gabbana," said Olga Zaretskaya, editor-in-chief of Marie Claire Russia. "If someone who works in an office buys a D&G bag, people will know it cost €3,000 [£2,700]. If she buys a McQueen bag, it will cost her more than €3,000 and no one will know," she said.

British designers were notably absent from this year's Russian Fashion Week (RFW), which closed yesterday, and which has previously played host to designers such as Julien Macdonald.

"In peak seasons, RFW had 65-75 shows, but this season we saw a decrease in the number of participants," said Alexander Shumsky, the president of Russian Fashion Week. "The fashion markets are down, so brands and designers need to reduce expenses," he said.

Moscow's famous department store GUM, which virtually overshadows St Basil's Cathedral in Red Square, has seen the number of shoppers fall by 30 per cent this year.

Happily, the market for British fashion does not look quite so bleak across other emerging markets. Although Vivienne Westwood may be withdrawing on the Russian front, the firm is expanding into Asia; while Alexander McQueen has just opened a new branch in Qatar.

"We are really strong in Hong Kong and Macao, and we are opening in Shanghai and Beijing. We are going to open in other cities in China, and India will happen soon," Mr D'Amario said.

If there's one buzz word in the fashion world at the moment, it's 'vintage'. It has become the ultimate trend of the moment, with people cottoning on to the appeal of owning something retro, and in many ways unique.

The funny thing is that some people have been championing vintage clothing for years. They've been rummaging through charity shops, inheriting items from family members and creating their own style for ages, and it's only now that it's been offically given the cool label.

Celebrities such as Kate Moss and Agyness Deyn are huge fans of vintage fashion, as are Sienna Miller, Daisy Lowe, Fearne Cotton and Alexa Chung, which begs the question- how has this failed to be cooler sooner?

Charity shops have seen a surge in shoppers, as people abandon the big names in the hope they will find a rare gem, a designer cast-off or maybe a celebrity inspired outfit for the night. What's also pretty great is that most of the main trends this season are inspired by decades gone by, so you may bag a retro leather jacket from the 50s or a funky fur gilet from the 70s, the choice is yours.

For spring 2008 fashion trends, prints are painterly with joyful expressive marks that suggest the luxuriant artist brushstrokes only found in hand painting. The ethereal coloured effects are of vibrant watercolour paints that are ripe with the botanical succulence of a cascading flower filled jardinière.

Watch for fabrics with super size cabbage roses, daisies, tea roses, orchids, poppies and exotic blooms. Part of this look is enhanced by tie dye watercolour effects where pattern fades into watercolour runs or colour bleeding.

Think of fabrics and accessories that have the appearance of a work-of-art canvas. These hand painted fabrics often have prints and textures that concentrate on flowers, blooms, buds and blossoms, but some prints are more abstract. Look out for mass market versions of hand painted effects.

These blooms have varying tactile characteristics, ranging from flower petals that appear paper-dry like a pastel, silken like a wet paint petal, or like a vibrant effusion of watercolour like tints. Others have the chalky sheerness of pressed flowers.

Bali is well known for its beautiful beaches, incredible vistas, glorious sunset, ideal location for high level conventions and summits but now also for its creative fashion event due to the continuous success of the Bali Fashion Week. BFW is a unique fashion event that fuses fashion, art, culture into a fun-filled and inspiring festival that is developing into a significant world fashion event.

The 7th edition of BFW opened on Nov 22, 2007 under the theme of "Fashion Meets Art". This four day annual event rolls fashion, art and culture into one creating "An Arena for Excellence". Besides the remarkable legacy of unique culture, friendly people and most incredible panorama, Bali is the concrete example of our efforts to blend a promotion of tourism, fashion trade and investment (TTI).

With a wide support of the government and numerous private local and international enterprises and involvement of the fashion community of Indonesia, this action-packed four-day event included trade exhibition, seminars, open dialogue with designers, Going Green Handbag Design Competition, Fashion Model Award, one week of evening Fashion Shows, which build to a crescendo with the Mardi Gras, fashion carnival FashiONtheStreet - on the last evening.

The Trade exhibition will display garments, accessories, textiles, with handwork, embroidery, knit, crochet and beading treatment, as well as CAD/CAM systems for aiding apparel design and production. A series of seminars were conducted in parallel to the exhibition, the topics of which ranged from fashion & colour trends, design technology, marketing and business skills and environmental issues.

The three evening fashion shows were held at an amphitheatre with the beach & sea as backdrop. Three cargo containers provided the stage setting with bold messages - "From Bali to Paris", "From Bali to New York", and "From Bali to the World" - plastered on the sides. Models sashayed no less than 25 collections by 24 designers down the catwalk from traditional to modern day casual wear, leisure wear, eveningwear, children's wear and futuristic cyber-wear.

The creative thinking atmosphere of Bali nurtured a new breed of fashion designers comprised of local Balinese and expatriates from four corners of the world who have decided to make Bali their home. Bali is home to a large expatriate community, many of them are involved in the fashion industry. Their collections showed free-thinking design expressions inspired by the resort lifestyle of Bali, and new-age electronic cyber characters. The collection designed by children for children was indeed a charmer on the catwalk.

At the carnival, 20 groups, some on horse-drawn chariots, some in open top cars, and others on foot, each with their own themes paraded through town that took more than one hour and ended on the beautiful Kuta Beach, against the backdrop of the glorious Pacific sunset, bringing BFW to a grand finale.
Environmental protection is an ongoing concern of the residents of this pristine island. Several carnival costumes were statements on protection of nature, stop air pollution, promote culture and enjoy nature. Some portrayed as people in bandages and face masks to filter the polluted air emitted from the sick earth. The winning designs of the Going Green Handbag Design competition went to designs that used recycled computer chips, newspaper and waste paper.

Bali is awarded the most favoured island in the world. The idyllic setting and dynamic blend of eastern and western cultures provided Bali an ideal platform for fusion, transforming and forward-looking fashion as well as designs that respond to tropical weather, leisure lifestyle connected by the rich culture. Owing to this good mix of local and foreign cultures and an atmosphere that encourages creative thinking, Bali has become a breeding ground for fashion creativity. The cross cultural taste in women's fashion and the popularity of spa and resort lifestyle today supports Bali Fashion Week as an ideal place to congregate, express & present such fashion ideas by local and international designers.

While Confidential couldn't confirm if David Beckham followed suit with his steamy Armani campaign earlier this year, finalist Rhys Uhlich's test-run, to be aired in tonight's episode of Make Me A Supermodel, is proof enough that Wallace knows what she's talking about.

While the other two competitors, Billy Bishop and Tom Penfold, also went in search of some Wonder White for the Van Heusen shoot, it was host Jennifer Hawkins who was left in wonderment.

We couldn't help but feel cheated when the Sex and the City movie premiered in London first. We knew the last night's New York premiere was coming, but there was no guarantee Sarah Jessica Parker would wear as awesome a hat as she did across the pond. And as you can see, she disappointed us and left her head free of ornament. Harrumph. You know, New York can be zany, too, Sarah. Nevertheless, we love the dress, and we suppose the funk factor is accounted for with that train — but it makes us worry about how much work it took her to drag it around. She's wee, after all! Also, the very ends of it are kind of channeling an octopus costume from the Little Mermaid musical. At least it doesn't clash with the pink carpet
